Natural vs. Lab-Grown

Two Origins. Two Beautiful Choices. One Honest Conversation.

Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds share the beauty, brilliance, and durability that make diamonds so remarkable. The primary difference is not what they are—it is how and where they were created.

At J.Klos Fine Jewelers, we believe choosing a diamond should be exciting, personal, and never confusing. We offer both natural and laboratory-grown diamonds, and we will help you understand the differences so you can confidently choose the diamond that feels right for you.

What Do Natural and Lab-Grown Diamonds Have in Common?

Both natural and laboratory-grown diamonds are composed of crystallized carbon and possess essentially the same chemical, physical, and optical properties.

Both can offer:

  • Exceptional brilliance, fire, and sparkle
  • The lasting hardness and durability expected from a diamond
  • A wide selection of shapes, sizes, colors, and clarity qualities
  • Independent laboratory documentation identifying their origin and quality

A laboratory-grown diamond is not cubic zirconia, glass, or moissanite. Those are diamond alternatives. A laboratory-grown diamond is an actual diamond with a different origin.

What Is a Natural Diamond?

A natural diamond is one of the Earth’s rarest creations.

Natural diamonds formed under extraordinary heat and pressure deep beneath the Earth’s surface, with some dating back billions of years. Ancient volcanic activity eventually carried these diamonds close enough to the surface to be discovered.

Each natural diamond is a limited and completely individual piece of the Earth’s history. Its inclusions and subtle characteristics are part of the story of how it formed.

Why Choose a Natural Diamond?

A natural diamond may be the right choice if you value:

  • A rare gemstone created entirely by nature
  • A connection to billions of years of Earth’s history
  • The tradition and symbolism associated with natural diamonds
  • An heirloom intended to be passed from one generation to the next
  • A more established long-term market for rare, high-quality diamonds

For many people, the remarkable natural journey of the diamond is as meaningful as its beauty.

What Is a Laboratory-Grown Diamond?

created in a controlled environment using advanced technology

A laboratory-grown diamond is created in a controlled environment using advanced technology that recreates the conditions necessary for diamond crystal growth. The two primary methods are High Pressure, High Temperature—known as HPHT- and Chemical Vapor Deposition, known as CVD. Both begin with a tiny diamond seed onto which carbon atoms gradually form a larger diamond crystal.

Once grown, the diamond is cut and polished using the same skills and techniques used for natural diamonds.

Why Choose a Lab-Grown Diamond?

A laboratory-grown diamond may be the right choice if you value:

  • The beauty and durability of a diamond at a lower initial price
  • A larger diamond or higher specifications within a particular budget
  • More flexibility when creating a custom engagement ring or jewelry design
  • Modern technology and a manufactured origin
  • Making visual impact and personal style the highest priorities

Laboratory-grown diamonds can be an excellent option for engagement rings, anniversary jewelry, earrings, pendants, and statement pieces.

Can You See the Difference?

In most cases, natural and laboratory-grown diamonds of comparable quality appear the same to the unaided eye. Both can exhibit exceptional sparkle, brilliance, and fire.

The difference is found in microscopic growth patterns and trace characteristics that trained gemologists and advanced laboratory equipment can detect. This is why proper identification and clear documentation are important.

Does One Sparkle More Than the Other?

No. A diamond’s sparkle is influenced primarily by the quality of its cut—not whether it formed beneath the Earth or inside a laboratory.

A beautifully cut natural diamond and a beautifully cut laboratory-grown diamond can both be breathtaking. Likewise, a poorly cut diamond of either origin may appear dull or lifeless. At J.Klos Fine Jewelers, we look beyond the paperwork and help you select a diamond that performs beautifully in real life.

What About Long-Term Value?

Natural diamonds generally have a more established resale market because of their natural origin, rarity, and limited supply. Laboratory-grown diamonds typically offer a lower initial purchase price, but their future market values may change as production technology and availability continue to evolve.

We do not recommend purchasing either type of diamond as a guaranteed financial investment. A diamond should first be chosen for its beauty, meaning, and the memories it will represent.

Which Diamond Is Right for You?

There is no single answer that is right for everyone.

Some people are captivated by the rarity, history, and tradition of a natural diamond. Others prefer the size, quality, and design possibilities offered by a laboratory-grown diamond. Both can be meaningful choices when you understand exactly what you are purchasing.

The best way to decide is to compare them side by side.
